From the vibrant & colorful book, What We Wear, to a discussion of young adult reading interests in India and a list of global literary events this month, Paper Tigers delivers an international edge. The article regarding young adults in India serves to make our world just a little bit smaller. The interests and issues of the Indian youth sound hauntingly familiar to the youth in my own home and in our local schools. What intrigued me as well is the admission that perhaps the young adults of India are a bit lost in the literary world. When they were younger and forming an interest in reading, the schools did not have many genres to offer and as a result the children did not engender a love of reading. It goes to show that we all share the same issues, concerns and interests regardless of what

As we all do, or at least I am fond of doing, we change our mind, make a new path and start over. That is what has happened with my Social Studies Unit Plan. I am no longer writing about the evolution of technology as it relates to human communication, as it was just too wordy. My unit plan is now focused on the essential question of how immigration shaped the USA's Westward Expansion and uncovering how one person really does make a difference. The literature blog Paper Tigers has been an interesting read, but this week it proved quite fruitful. Within its top ten list, they discuss two picture books that tell the story of immigrants and the harrowing experiences that they face. The first book is The Arrival and the second is The Island. The book reviews in the blog are extremely helpful and include links to external sources and sometimes even teaching materials s I continue to follow the blog, Technology with Intention, and learn so much! This week, I learned about Google Earth as an educational tool. Until now, I thought it was just a cool site. By watching a Google On Air discussion, I was able to learn how to take a global journey along side characters from popular literature, such as Night, using a website called Google Lit Trips. You can go on a safari in Africa or visit concentration camps. I will admit, there is a bit of a time investment to download and learn how to navigate the Lit Trips, but it is well worth the time investment. Go ahead, check
How has technology and communication evolved over the years and into the future? This is the essential question that I am pondering for our Social Studies unit. Looking back to the caveman, the early 15th century, the Industrial Revolution and stretching ourselves to imagine a future in the 22nd century. How will we communicate and what role will technology play in that communication. Facebook recently put out an an and it was featured on the Technology with Intention blog that I have been following. It surrounds the simplest of technologies, the chair and has that touchy feeling of the old Hallmark commercials that yes, still makes me tear up. What I like about the commercial and the blog is that the teacher asks his students what is technology and centers around how we leverage technology to communicate. This video can be a great tool to engage our students into a discussion around technology, what it is, how it enables communication, impacts society and just where do we see its future. Technology with Intention http://www.techwithintent.com/ is a blog dedicated to the application of technology within education. Over the past several weeks, the blog has highlighted variable online resources such as TED Ed Flip Lessons, that are video lessons which drive a higher order of thinking amongst students. It allows for the mass sharing of lessons taught throughout the world, individuals teachers are then able to adjust and edit what they would like their students to learn and how they will interact with the lesson. Here are two links: What is Flip- Video and an example of a flip lesson.
Innovative, authentic learning is crucial to achieve higher levels of knowledge within our classrooms and an environment of learning. This blog provides technology driven lessons, it also discusses changes in cloud technology which enable communication of resources amongst your classroom and it even will teach you how to set up a blog. Unlike a mere resource list of possible resources, this blog provides a variety of technology tools usable in all aspects of the classroom. |
